Leap year babies 'have special celebrations'

At first, it may seem like a leap year birthday could be a disadvantage - less cake, less singing and fewer special moments for the photo albums.

However, some people who were born on February 29th have spoken out about their unique situation, saying they take advantage of the once-every-four-years occasion to really go all out.

Massachusetts resident Sarah Hubbard told the MetroWest Daily News that due to the rarity of its arrival, she has traditionally stretched her birthday out over two days.

Meanwhile, Tanya Lipp, who was born in 1972, described how her college friends put on a special celebration when she turned 20 years old.

"My friends threw me a fifth birthday party because they said I never had one, complete with streamers and pin the tail on the donkey," she told the publication.

Expectant mothers whose due date falls this Friday may want to start getting the cameras ready to fill the baby album with mementos of their special leap year arrival.

Even for those not born on the day, February 29th may promise a celebration; tradition has it that this is the day when women are encouraged turn the tables and propose to a man.
