Make a time capsule at your New Year's Eve party

With many people counting their pennies this holiday season, it might not be the best time to plan a big New Year's Eve bash. However, if you can take the time to do a bit of simple party planning, you can celebrate your friends, family and the end to the decade by making your very own time capsule at the party.

Ask each guest to bring a small item that they feel best represents the first decade of the 2000s. If you're inviting a large group, it might be a better idea to ask each family to contribute one item. Some ideas to get you started are a copy of the Boston Globe front page from when the Red Sox won the World Series, a LiveStrong bracelet or a Subway menu, to represent Jared's popularity and weight loss story.

As the host, you get to choose the capsule itself, and include a couple of family pictures and a note. Pick an airtight, waterproof box that can be buried, if you so choose, or that you might want to hide in a crawl space.

This nostalgic party idea can be simple, fun and won't take much party planning, provided you choose to pick up pre-made appetizers, dips and other finger foods to feed your guests.
