Making baby's first birthday a hit

The party planning for a child's first birthday is a bit different from organizing an event for older kids - it may even be more about the parents than the kids themselves.

First, make sure you choose a date far in advance and schedule the fun to last for two hours or less, in keeping with the average baby's attention span. Don't forget to take naptimes into account.

Second, keep it simple. Avoid overwhelming yourself and your child by inviting only a handful of other little ones to the event.

There's no need to provide a particular theme for your baby's bash, but if you want you can choose a favorite storybook, cartoon character or animal as an inspiration.

Solicit suggestions for food from the children's parents before the big day. Some infants may have dietary restrictions, while some parents may prefer their baby enjoys a healthier alternative to birthday cake.

As for activities, setting out a collection of safe and stimulating toys is probably more appropriate at this age than organizing games.

To document this milestone, you may want to have some customizable photo albums on hand, so that attendees can record their best wishes for the little guest of honor.
