Painting party: The perfect rainy day activity

Kids have just returned to school and are probably treasuring their weekends more than ever. Turn a rainy Saturday frown into a smile and organize a painting party for rainy days spent indoors.

Involve your kids in the party planning process by asking them to help pick out old shirts to use as smocks. Older children may want to decorate and personalize their own painting shirts, so have a few fabric paints, glue and buttons on hand so they can make their creations.

If you can, borrow or use an old table - you don't want little Picassos splashing paint on your antique dining room furniture. Enlist other parents to help with the party planning and invite their kids to join in order to obtain all the items you need.

Of course, a painting party requires brushes, paints in lots of colors and paper. For the latter, try to pick up some recycled paper or find out if another parent is a teacher and may have a surplus. Have one of the other parents bring an old sheet to protect your floor from accidents.

Finally, serve a fruit platter shaped like an artists' palette with grapes, oranges, strawberries and green apples. Invite the kids into the kitchen to decorate sugar cookies in brightly colored frosting to match their work.
