Smoothie parties offer a healthy option for kids

Every child loves cake and ice cream - but with summer parties in full swing, all of those sweets can go a bit overboard.

Parents who want a healthier alternative may want to consider basing their party planning around fruit smoothies. Kids will enjoy assembling their own ingredients and then watching the blender whir them together.

July is National Blueberry Month, so what better opportunity to buy cartons of fresh blueberries from the market for smoothies? Also purchase some strawberries, raspberries, mango, banana and other fruits that could combine well together.

As for what to mix with the fruit, make sure you have some plain yogurt, orange juice, pineapple juice and milk on hand. Ice can add a frosty consistency to make it more like a snow cone.

Some smoothie aficionados may enjoy a spoonful of peanut butter in their beverage - particularly when combined with banana - but it's up to you.

For the sake of efficiency and to keepthe party flowing, having more than one blender on hand would be optimal. Before you know it, the kids will be having so much fun they'll forget what they're eating is healthy!
