Thrill the kids with a backyard camping party
For many children, the prospect of pitching a tent in the backyard and sleeping under the stars is just as exciting as traveling into the great outdoors.
As part of your party planning to-do list, send out invitations decorated with stick-on stars in the shape of different constellations. Remind guests to bring a sleeping bag, pillow and flashlight.
Feel free to keep games simple and classic. In addition to roasting hot dogs and marshmallows over a fire (or on the grill), singing campfire songs or playing hide 'n' seek. Take plenty of pictures for the photo albums.
You could also set up a scavenger hunt, with a prize for those who collect the most items on their list. Include a couple of special items you hide yourself - such as plastic jewelry - along with items from nature.
When the sky gets dark, kids can play flashlight tag and gather around a lantern to share ghost stories. Bring popcorn out from the kitchen for a late-night snack.
In the morning, invite campers inside to design their own omelets or choose fancy toppings for their pancakes.
